Procedure for Handling Blood spills during the Manicure.

At times during a manicure, bleeding may occur as a result of too much filling or some other reasons. The safety and sanitation factors involved in an incident of this nature are of the utmost importance for both you and your client. If bleeding should occur, follow this procedure;

  • Immediately put on gloves and inform your client of what has happened. Apologize and proceed.
  • Apply slight pressure to the bleeding site with cotton and an antiseptic.
  • Apply powdered alum or other styptic (liquid or spray), using the end of a cotton-wrapped orange-wood stick. Do not contaminate the container. Never place the orange stick back into the container once it has been applied to an opened area on the skin. Do not use a styptic pencil.
  • Apply a bandage to the cut, if necessary.
  • Discard any blood contaminated disposable implement and materials (such as cotton or towels) by double bagging (place the waste in plastic bag and then in a trash bag). Use a bio-hazard sticker (red or orange) or a container for contaminated waste. Deposit sharp disposable in a sharp box.
  • Once you have removed your gloves, wash your hands with soap and warm water.
  • Complete the services as called for.
  • Properly and thoroughly disinfect all implements that have come in contact with blood or body fluid in a registered hospital, tuberculocidal disinfecting solution.
